Ringing the ears or tinnitus is not a disease as what most people believe. Tinnitus is a symptom of an underlying medical condition, ear infection or hearing loss. Most of time, people suffering from tinnitus may hear a ringing, whistling or roaring sound in one or both ears, with no external source.
Ringing the ears or tinnitus may be due to several factors. In most cases, it is due to damage in the microscopic ending of the person's hearing nerve. If these nerves are severely damages, it may lead to permanent hearing loss.
